Beth is a graduate of Fort Atkinson High School who has been working at The Velveteen Rabbit since summer 2004, and has been an insatiable reading addict all her life. She loves nonfiction history and psychology books, as well as many, many different genres of novels. She is in her senior year of college, pursuing a double major in Psychology and English at UW-Whitewater. On the rare occasion she's not reading, she likes cooking, puppies and video games.

Sin in the Second City: Madams, Ministers, Playboys, and the Battle for America's Soul (Paperback)

By Karen Abbott
$15.00
ISBN-13: 9780812975994
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Random House Trade Paperbacks, 06/01/2008

Beth says: My interest in Chicago history started with Devil in the White City by Erik Larson and has since gotten out of control. I completely devour any book that has anything to do with Chicago--especially in the 1920's--but this one has proven to be a favorite. Abbott writes history with the prose of a seasoned novelist, creating an unbelievably readable book packed with real information. You'll love the history of the notorious Everleigh Club brothel, and all the famous figures that frequented the place, but most interesting is the business savvy of madams Minnie and Ada Everleigh.

$24.95
ISBN-13: 9780399155345

Beth says: The Help is one of those extraordinary books that will change you, that has the power to transform your view of everything--especially reading. Debut novelist Stockett has written one of the most perfect books I've read in a long time. The Help is the remarkable story of the black women who were servants of rich Southern belles in the 1960's. Every character is richly drawn and feels so real. A truly, TRULY wonderful book.

An Offer From a Gentleman (Mass Market Paperback)

By Julia Quinn
$7.99
ISBN-13: 9780380815586
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Avon, 07/01/2001

Beth says: There's something absolutely irresistible about devouring a historical romance on a lazy afternoon, and Julia Quinn is just the author for that. Her "Bridgerton" series is funny, smart, touching and addicting. And since you don't have to read the eight books in the series in any particular order, start with this one. Because you'll like it.

The Poetry of Pablo Neruda (Paperback)

By Pablo Neruda, Ilan Stavans (Editor)
$20.00
ISBN-13: 9780374529604
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 04/01/2005

Beth says: Pablo Neruda has captured my heart. I've never had a real interest in poetry, but Neruda's verses are passionate, vivacious, and wonderful. This particular version with English translations is an absolute must.

Made in America (Paperback)

By Bill Bryson
$14.99
ISBN-13: 9780380713813
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Harper Perennial, 03/01/1996

Beth says: If you're like me, a self-proclaimed word and grammar fanatic, you'll devour this history of the English language. Packed with etymology trivia and Bryson's signature sense of humor, this is an absolutely wonderful book for those who love words. Even history lovers will find little gems of new knowledge in Bryson's book!
