Richard Wanie was raised in Horicon, WI. Graduating from Horicon High School, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and later received a masters degree in biology at the University of Michigan. After serving in the army, he accepted a science teaching position in the Fort Atkinson school system in 1960. He remained in the school system for 36 years. He and his wife Carol raised three children; Christin, Patricia and Matthew. Wanie still resides in Fort Atkinson.
